Why
I love to teach for several reasons, and there are probably too many for me to list. However, I can articulate some of them for you. Students have so many possibilities before them that it is amazing to be in the mix, impact youth, develop influence, help with small or large decisions, and leading. In addition, it is thrilling to me to witness people grasp a new concept, achieve desired educational results, and accomplish personal goals. I have a tremendous level of respect for all who do this, and it is truly an honor to be in this profession.
Course Guarantee
If you will work hard and follow the system of practice, you will not fail this course! It does not matter how bad you think you are at math.
Course Description
Successful completion of Algebra 1 is required for enrollment in this course. The goal of this course is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences by exploring more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. Transformations are emphasized early and the Mathematical Practices are applied throughout. Critical areas include rigid motions, triangle congruence, similarity, and geometric relationships, properties of special triangles and quadrilaterals, and theorems about circles.
Class Materials
It is vital to the learning experience that students have their supplies each day. Please bring each of the following to class each day:
Grading Policies
Semester grades are comprised of the following categories and their corresponding weights:
Assignments (15%): Assignments will be assigned most class periods and will be due the following class meeting unless notified otherwise. Assignments will be completed in pencil, showing all work, and turned in on time. These will be graded on completion, not on correct answers.
In addition to assignments, students will be required to keep a notebook. This will be referred to daily consisting of assignments, quizzes, and notes. The grade for this will be included in the assignments category of the students overall grade.
Exams/ Quizzes (40%): Quizzes will be given frequently. The format for these will vary, but they will always be a check for understanding of the topic covered in class. Exams will be given at the conclusion of each unit of study. These will be an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have learned. They are the most heavily weighted part of the student’s grade.
Test retakes will be offered for most tests. In order to be eligible for a retake, the student must a) have completed all homework prior to original test, b) complete an extra review activity (determined by instructor).
Employability (15%): Students will be given a grade based on their ability to perform at a construction job in the real work force. This grade will consist of attendance, pride in their work, clean up responsibility, employee morale, team work, following procedures, and safety.
Hands On (20%): This is the section of your grade that will comprise of predominantly your construction work. This can include geometry work, work completion, quality of work, accuracy, meeting deadlines, evidence that instructions were followed, and safety.
Final Exam (10%): the final exam counts for 10% of the total grade, and will be comprehensive. This means that any type of question covered during the course is potentially on the final exam.
Extra Assistance Opportunities
In the Mathematics Department, we want students to have every opportunity to be successful. For this reason, there are many times for students to come in for extra assistance including: Seminar- Thursday block days, Mornings 7:30-7:55 on M, T, W, and F, and Eagle Opps. It is recommended that students check with their instructor before coming in before school to ensure availability. Students should not hesitate to ask for extra help if they are having difficulty.
